Pick the world up…
For all of us who missed it last night, here’s the final performance of Grammy night. Lil Wayne, Eminem, and Drake performed “Drop The World” and “Forever,” censoring themselves quite well. In fact, they barely cursed at all. Shocked?
CBS went censor happy on the performance, yet put them on last to keep the attention of hip hop enthusiasts. Since hip hop is now the dominant genre of music, it was a way to keep a younger audience engaged. Let’s be honest. But for all of those unfamiliar with the music, the performance was seen as a mess of intolerable lyrics and excessive riff raff. Lil Wayne’s got too many tattoos, I can’t understand what he’s saying, so there must not be a point to his lyrics anyway. Eminem spits hate, and who is this Drake guy anyway? But the truth is that these lyrics have inspired millions, and will continue to for many years to come. Pull up a chair, get comfortable, and try to understand.
You also missed Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker on the drums. With all the censoring his drumming was virtually inaudible. The rappers did censor, and without the distractions of the “aggressive content,” their message was crystal clear. But CBS didn’t think that you should hear it.
Just calling a spade a spade.
