The Yanks and the “Empire State”

Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do…

Last night the Yankees slid their way into the World Series– like it would have gone differently. 🙂

When team captain Derek Jeter comes to bat, his theme song is Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind.” With Yankee pride so strong, this song sums up the hum of the city from last night’s win. I couldn’t help but keep it on replay on my way to work this morning. Growing up with the Yanks, I’ve been spoiled with their wins. They dominated baseball when I was in high school. A Yanks’ win was not a possibility, but an inevitability.

When I think of Jay-Z, I can barely remember seeing him without the Yankee cap. It’s one of the most iconic and recognizable caps in baseball. It symbolizes the wins of legends ranging from Babe Ruth to Mariano Rivera. Hip hop artists don the Yankee cap proudly in a variety of colors. They equate the Yanks with being the best, and the badge that reps New York City.

New York is the home of Jay-Z, but he’d probably say that no one has more swagger than a Yankees fan. Yankee Stadium is my absolute favorite place in New York. It’s the place where you can find New Yorkers from every borrough, old and young, all nationalities, collectively rooting for the home team. It doesn’t matter if we win or lose, because once Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” plays, we remember that we are from the best city in the world, and the swagger returns instantly. So we head to Stan’s and celebrate our home team with a beer and some good dance music and trash the visiting team. Gotta love the Bronx.

My grandparents slow danced to Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” in their heyday. Billy Joel gave my parents a “New York State of Mind.” And now Jay-Z has given my generation our New York anthem. Once you press play it gets you charged like Rocky. When you step out on the city streets, anything is possible.

No team does it quick like the boys in pin stripes. Philly, we’re coming for you!
