Hollis Avenue and 205th street just got some bragging rights. On Sunday, the home of P.S. 192 and my mom’s grocery store officially became Run DMC/JMJ Way. For anyone who knows me, I’m a walking PSA for Queens Village, so this is major! My slice of suburbia, the last stop on the F train and home of the best Jamaican beef patties, just honored Run DMC with the very first city street renamed in honor of a rap group, in the neighborhood where they grew up. Yes!
Queens is also the home of Salt N Pepa, LL Cool J, and most recently 50 Cent. At the renaming ceremony, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run-DMC was focused on inspiring the next crop of innovators: “Hip-hop is about us doing the best with what we have to make it better for all the people after us.” With underground artists like Gist the Essence, with a style that pays homage to the hip hop class that precedes him and a diverse message that builds on his experience growing up in Queens Village, that legacy will remain strong.
Queens, birthplace of champions!
